Wear Mechanisms of PVD Coated HSS Endmills Used to Machine 1045 Hardened Steel

Abstract In general, Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD)-TiN coated High Speed Steel (HSS) endmills used to machine carbon steels can perform better at high cutting speeds compared with uncoated tools resulting in better surface finish and longer tool life. Flank wear is believed to be the main wear type that leads to shorten the life of these cutting tools. In this study, the roles of the coating layer in reducing wear rates and changing wear mechanisms that cause failure of the PVD coated endmills were investigated. It is important to note that high temperature at the corner wear or leading cutting edge is the main reason for the failure of the coated HSS tools at high cutting speeds and feed rates.
